What is IS 2062 E250 Plate ?

IS 2062 E250 Steel Plate is a carbon steel material used in structural applications. The Indian Standard IS 2062 specifies the requirements for hot-rolled medium and high-tensile structural steel. '250' is the minimum yield strength in MPa, and 'E' is the grade.

This E250 steel is available in various forms, such as plates, sheets, bars, sections and strips. IS 2062 E250 Mild Steel Plates is known for its excellent mechanical properties, such as high yield strength and good tensile strength and it is used in load-bearing applications. The E250 material is normally 0.16 to 0.29 % carbon, compromising strength and ductility.

Although the IS 2062 E250 plates have reduced ductility and relatively low melting points, they have good temperature resistance and will perform well under varied environmental conditions. These plates are used in construction, bridge building, general engineering, infrastructure and automobile manufacturing. E250 grade steel is chosen for structural steel fabrication due to its durability and ability to stand significant weight without deformation.

E250 vs E350 Steel

The E250 and E350 are both structural grades of carbon steel under the IS 2062 standard, but the difference between e250 and e350 is in their mechanical properties, chemical composition and use.

Compared to the E250 grade, the E350 grade has a greater tensile and yield strength. The carbon content in E250 is 0.23, while that in E350 is 0.20.

Both grades are weldable, but the E250 is easier to cut, weld and form. On the other hand, the E350 may need preheat treatment for thicker sections during the fabrication process.

Difference between E250a and E250br

IS 2062 E250A and E250BR are both widely used structural steel grades, with their primary difference lying in their carbon content.

  • IS 2062 E250BR has a carbon content of 0.22%, with a carbon equivalent of 0.41%.
  • IS 2062 E250A contains slightly more carbon at 0.23%, resulting in a carbon equivalent of 0.42%.

The main difference between E250a and E250br is the percentage of carbon and their usage. E250A offers better corrosion resistance, while E250BR is designed for structural integrity under various environmental conditions.

When buying E 250 steel plates, consider the main points of the IS 2062 standard.

  • Based on minimal yield stress. This implies that the yield stress now precisely defines the steel's strength, guaranteeing that the material satisfies the strength specifications required for your particular application.
  • The amount of silicon and aluminum in the steel is stated in relation to steel treatment. The silicon content of semi-killed steel should be less than 0.10%. The amount of silicon or aluminum in dead steel is determined by the manner of treatment. At least 0.02% aluminum should be present if aluminum is used, and at least 0.10% silicon should be present if silicon is used. There are minimal content requirements for silicon and aluminum when both are utilized.
  • Another crucial factor to take into account is the steel's weldability. Weldability improves from grade A to C, especially in E 250 and E 275 grades, but grades A, BR, B0, and C are typically appropriate for welding. E 250 steel plates are therefore perfect for welding in a variety of applications.
  • The carbon equivalent (CE) of steel is a number that is determined based on the steel's chemical composition, and it is used to determine how easily the steel can be welded. This ensures that the steel will maintain its integrity and quality when subjected to welding processes.
  • Niobium (Nb), vanadium (V), and titanium (Ti) are examples of micro-alloying elements that may be added to steel to increase its strength and durability. Nevertheless, the sum of these components shouldn't be more than 0.25%.
  • It is also possible to add alloying elements like molybdenum (Mo), nickel (Ni), and chromium (Cr), especially in higher-grade steels like E 600 and E 650. There should be no more than 0.50 percent chromium and 0.60 percent nickel in these grades.
  • To enhance the steel's qualities, copper can be added; this is usually done in the range of 0.20% to 0.35%, but the buyer and the manufacturer should agree on this. A Cu suffix, such as E 250 Cu, will be used to identify the steel grade if copper is present.
  • Any Incidental Elements not specified in the standard will not be added to the steel unless agreed upon. Unapproved elements can impact the steel's strength, durability, and overall performance, so it's crucial to ensure that no unintended materials are introduced during manufacturing.
  • The nitrogen content in the steel is at most 0.012%, and manufacturers will periodically check this to maintain quality. If required, the steel may undergo treatment with calcium-based compounds or rare earth elements to improve its formability, making it easier to shape during manufacturing.
  • Lastly, Lower limits for carbon equivalent and more precise limits for other elements may be mutually agreed between buyer and manufacturer, ensuring the steel meets your specific requirements

Comparison with Other Steel Grades

IS 2062 Gr E250 is similar to other steel grades such as S275JR (EN10025-2) or ASTM A36 in mechanical properties, but is more cost-effective due to its regional availability. It offers a good balance between performance and affordability, which makes it the choice of domestic projects.
